Press Release:
Canberrans to Support “NoToPope” Protest

7/6/08 for immediate release

A group of protesters from the local Canberra group “Campaign for Civil Unions” will be traveling to Sydney to attend the “NoToPope” protest on the 19th of July.

Activists will hand out condoms at Dickson Shops (outside Woolworths), 11am on Saturday the 12th of July to promote the “NoToPope” protest. Media representatives are invited to attend.

“We encourage people in Canberra to travel to Sydney for this important demonstration,” said activist Farida Iqbal, “We have to stand up for our right to protest and our right to freedom of expression. Who is to say what is ‘annoying’?

â€œIs this just an excuse to fine people $5500 just for protesting? This is a gross violation of civil liberties. Is this just a revenue raising measure?”

“We are protesting against the homophobic stance of the Catholic Church against equal marriage rights. People deserve the right to marry regardless of gender or sexual orientation.”

A protest for equal marriage rights will be held at 1:30pm, Garema Place on Saturday the 2nd of August
