Together we will occupy

Sunday, October 16, 2011

The world is rising up. When we look around the globe we see people in motion. Revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa against brutal dictators, the movements against austerity measures in Europe and Britain, democratic and indigenous revolutions in Latin America, and the Occupy Wall Street protests spreading across the United States. Resistance is in solidarity with all these movements for change.

What these movements have in common is a struggle for a more democratic society and a fight to end corporate control over people's lives. This is a struggle we share in Australia. We’re here for the same reason as everyone else. We’ve had enough — and we think an alternative is possible.

Adelaide university students win fight against tutorial cuts

Adelaide University.

Over the past month, humanities and social sciences students at Adelaide University have successfully fought back against attempted cuts to their tutorials.

In July, deputy vice-chancellor Professor Pascale Quester announced cuts to tutorial numbers from 12 to 10 or nine. The lost tutorials would be replaced by optional one-on-one consultation time with tutorial teachers.

What Gillard did for higher education

Prime Minister Julia Gillard is seeking to differentiate herself from ousted Kevin Rudd to show her promotion to PM is more than an attempt to re-badge a political party in crisis.

Facebook makes clear: students and teachers overwhelmingly oppose NAPLAN

Thousands of anti-NAPLAN supporters outnumber solitary pro-NAPLAN person!

Despite the Australian Education Union dropping its boycott of NAPLAN testing, protest on the social networking site Facebook shows overwhelming opposition to the tests - from teachers & students alike. One group which has over a thousand supporters is calling on students to "strike" against the tests, which have been linked to the production of League tables to simplistically rank schools.

Boycott the NAPLAN tests!

Resistance calls on high school students to boycott the NAPLAN tests next week. While the Australian Education Union (AEU) has backed down on their plan to not administer the tests, the government agreement with the AEU is a potentially empty gesture. It does not ensure an end to the publishing of league-table style results. The outcome was simply a promise for dialogue to look at the concerns raised. Indeed, there are no government plans to review any content of the My School website or make any changes to the NAPLAN test or the way it is reported. Download: "No league tables!" petition and "Boycott the NAPLAN tests" leaflet.
