The price of basic food like corn and wheat has jumped dramatically in
the past few months, causing food to be too expensive for hundreds of
millions of people in the world to buy. This is the global food crisis,
in many countries the most desperate people are rioting for access to
the most basic human need: food. Even here in Australia the price of
groceries is going up and people are feeling the pinch. What's causing
this crisis? Why are hundreds of millions of people starving in the
midst of plenty? And most importantly, what can we do about it?
all welcome.

Students say: “ANZ don’t be a Fossil Fool, don’t fund this pulp mill”
As part of a national day of action against climate change on April 1, dubbed ‘Fossil Fools day’, students in Hobart and around Tasmania will be organizing protests against the proposed Gunns Tamar Valley pulp mill. The proposed mill is being targeted due to the calculated 2% contribution to Australia’s total carbon emissions if the mill is built. National protests against climate change, will include the demand to stop the Gunns Pulp Mill. One of the protest organizers, Josh Vandervlist stated “It is clear that the majority of Tasmanians and Australians are opposed to this mill, the people participating on Fossil Fools day are representing this majority, we are saying to ANZ don’t be a Fossil Fool, don’t fund this pulp mill.” A pledge will be launched at the protest for a boycott of the ANZ bank for generations, if the funding of this pulp mill goes ahead. One of the protest organizers, Alby Dallas will close his ANZ bank account on April 1. “I’m disgusted that ANZ is even thinking about funding this mill at a time when climate change needs to be seriously addressed. Closing my account with ANZ is one way I can show them that I’m opposed to them funding the mill.” The details of the Hobart Protest action are: Tuesday April 1, at 12.30pm at Hobart Parliament Lawns. Students Against the Pulp Mill are organizing a Students Strike as a component of the day, to show how much students care about stopping the Tamar Valley Mill. Some of the protest participants will be closing their bank accounts at the ANZ to show their opposition to ANZ contemplating the funding of the mill. For media contact call Josh (0400 971 073), Alby (0401 334 100) or Cal (0427 736 935)from the Fossil Fools Day protest organizing team.
