Same-sex discrimination is against international law, and Australia has been found in violation, for the refusal to provide a veteran's widow's pension to a man bereft of his partner. These laws were written to prevent a repeat of Naziism, you wouldn't think that Australia should have so much trouble with that.

I cannot see any reason why same sex marriage should not be legal. It being against the law is homophobic and it disgusts me that we have a government that can get away with that.

Of course no one should "need" to get married. The question is, should people of a particular sexuality be denied equality on this issue? I, and the majority across the country, don't think so. Infuriatingly, both Labor and Liberal DO favour such discrimination.

Marriage is the state intruding into personal relationships. Any form of "marriage" should be banned - queer, hetero or defacto. Freedom of state intervention in our personal lives is a right to be upheld. The campaign for same-sex marriage is playing into the hands of yet another layer of bureacracy entrapping us in government sanctioned personal prisons. Repeal the Marriage Act and the Family Law Act now!

I agree. Why should we need or want government approval of our personal relationships. In the past marriage was defined at the point of consummation, perhaps marked by a ceremony of celebration. We don't need another layer of bureaucracy, we need to distance ourselves from government, disempower their sense of authority and dismantle their structures and institutions. It is a bit late in the day to attempt to rebuild this organisational institution into something resembling fairness. Now is the time to move on to another system and admit that government hasn't worked.

The reason we fight for Same Sex marriage isn't because we think everyone should go out and get married and certainly not because we want the government to have the right to lord over our personal lives- but because we need to be constantly fighting for equality.
When there is a discriminatory law, that breeds discrimination. That tells homophobes that their views are legit- the government agrees. We draw out the contradictions of the government and our society better then we fight against laws that propagate hate.
