Socialist ideas seminars

Market greed or a plan for social need?

Wednesday, July 28, 7pm. (Cheap meal from 6.30pm.) Under capitalism, our economy is not planned. Its basic driver is the corporate thirst for profit, not meeting people's needs. Yet seriously tackling climate change and growing social disadvantage would seem to demand putting a conscious plan into practice in place of the prevailing market anarchy. Is a publicly owned, democratically planned economy actually feasible? Speaker: Dave Holmes.

  • Socialism, ecology and the crisis of climate change. Wednesday, August 11, 7pm. (Cheap meal from 6.30pm.) At the Copenhagen climate change conference, Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez trenchantly denounced capitalism. Is the corporate 'free market' responsible for climate change? What is the way forward? Speaker: Hans Baer.
  • Australia’s radical traditions: Some chapters from the history of the Communist Party. Wednesday, August 25, 7pm. (Cheap meal from 6.30pm.) The mass immigration program introduced shortly after the end of World War II transformed Australia from a predominantly Anglo-Saxon country to a multi-ethnic one. It posed a particular challenge for the labour movement given its long history of racism. This talk will examine the responses of communist-led unions to migrants bewteen 1945 to 1960. Speaker: Doug Jordan.

Socialist Ideas Seminars are held at the Resistance Centre, 5th floor, 407 Swanston St, City (opposite RMIT) on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Presented by Socialist Alliance. For further information ph 9639 8622.

Rally: Stand up for refugees

Let the boats land! Close all the detention centres!

Friday, August 13, 5.30pm. State Library, Swanston St, City. On World Refugee Day in June thousands of us marched through the streets of Melbourne to 'Say no to another Tampa election'. But that is just what we are getting. Instead of welcoming refugees to this country as we should, both major parties are bickering about how we can 'stop the boats' — boats of people fleeing persecution and misery that in many cases Australia had a role in causing.

We need to take to the streets again. This rally will be a chance for us to provide an alternative to the racist, inhumane policies being put forward by the Liberals and Labor. We will be demanding that refugee boats should be allowed to land in Australia, which should be welcoming people seeking asylum, not locking them up in hellish detention camps.

Don't let the racists be the only ones who are heard in this election. Join the rally, bring your friends, family and co-workers. Send a message that there are people in this country prepared to take a stand in defence of refugee rights. Organised by the Refugee Action Collective. RAC.
