Resistance calls for torch relay protests.

Resistance, socialist youth organisation is calling on people to protest China’s the brutal repression of the people of Tibet and people in the Autonomous Regions at the Olympic torch relay when it is Canberra. A demonstration will be held at 9am at Parliament House in Canberra on the 24th of April to coincide with the arrival of the Olympic torch. ”Resistance calls for the Chinese government to stop its violent oppression of Tibetan people. More than a thousand Tibetans have been detained since recent protests for self-determination began on March 10. A further 500 people of the Uighur nationality have also been detained following protests in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region on March 23 and 24. The people of Tibet and other oppressed nationalities under Chinese rule should have the right to self determination. It is for this reason that we are calling on people to protest” said Amy McDonell a Canberra member of Resistance. ” We to support the Tibetan communities right to protest we encourage everybody who supports human rights to participate. We are organising people to come from Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle to come to the protest” said James Bain, an activist with Resistance. McDonell said, “Resistance has had a long history of helping to organise protests, recently Resistance was part of organising the large, peaceful demonstrations at APEC. We expect that this will also be a peaceful protest. The real violence is being inflicted on the Tibetans and Uighurs by the Chinese government”. .
